Did your high school offer an apartment or house where students could learn real-life skills – like cooking, cleaning, laundry, budgeting, or even simple home maintenance? We were so excited when our school district finally agreed to create this kind of space. It became such a valuable resource. Students used it not only to practice everyday tasks like cooking and cleaning, but also to work on something just as important—the skill of simply hanging out and spending time together, a difficult skill to develop for individuals who are intellectually challenged.
But here’s the hardest part: the moment graduation arrived, this resource was taken away.
The house is gone.
What was once such an inspiring and practical tool becomes just a memory—right when it’s needed most.
That’s the gap Horizon Family Hub is determined to fill.
We believe independence shouldn’t end with high school. Our vision is to create a permanent home base—a space where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can continue building skills, growing friendships, and finding community long after graduation. Not a temporary classroom, but a lasting hub where opportunities don’t fade with age, but expand for a lifetime.
The school house planted the idea. Horizon Family Hub is here to make it real.
